Music

At GCMS, engagement in a musical education is valued for its ability to develop young people’s self-confidence, sense of identity and creativity.  We strive to inspire students to extend their musical talents and love of music whilst also developing team-working, self-discipline and perseverance.

All students have opportunities to take part in a range of musical activities throughout the year in addition to the hour of music timetabled for each class each week. A large number of students take instrumental lessons and many join school ensembles to hone their performance skills. We work in partnership with other Gosforth schools, The Newcastle Music Service Hub, NEMCO and other music providers such as the Sage, Gateshead.

There are several performances during the year including the Christmas Concert, School Show, Gosforth Pyramid Concerts, Gosforth Ceilidh and assemblies. Information on activities available appears on the school website.

The Music curriculum

At Key Stage 2, pupils are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They develop an understanding of musical composition and learn to read and write musical notation. They explore different styles of music and study aspects of music history.

At Key Stage 3, pupils extend their musical skills and knowledge. There is a greater focus on the elements of music and pupils use musical conventions to create their own music both instrumentally and with music technology.
